University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) is now accepting applications for the 2026 academic year. Prospective students interested in programs like Commerce, Law & Management, Engineering & the Built Environment, Health Sciences, Humanities, and Science are encouraged to apply. The online application portal is open starting March 1, 2025. However, all applicants to the Faculty of Science must take the National Benchmark Test on October 31, 2025.

When to Apply to Wits For 2026

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) application period for the 2026 academic year opens on March 1, 2025, and closes on September 30, 2025. The application deadlines are as follows:

• June 30, 2025: Faculty of Health Sciences (all programs), Bachelor of Architectural Studies, Bachelor of Audiology, Bachelor of Speech-Language Pathology, and BA in Film and TV.
• September 30, 2025: All other university programs and residence applications.
• Prospective students can apply for undergraduate or postgraduate studies during this period.

Wits University 2026 Application Requirements

The application fee for the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) for 2026 admissions depends on your citizenship:

• South African citizens and Permanent Residents: R100 (non-refundable)
• Foreign citizens: R700 (non-refundable)

Applying to Wits University: When to Reapply

Whether you need to reapply to Wits University after previously being rejected depends on the situation:

• If you are applying for the same program in the same academic year: You do not need to submit a new application. Wits University advises against doing so.
• If you are applying for a different program or in a different academic year: You should submit a new application. This is because each program and year has its own selection process and competition, and your previous application is not automatically considered for future applications.

It’s important to note that even if you are applying for a different program, Wits might still have your application information on file. However, they will still require you to submit a new application and go through the regular application process.

Wits Application: Online Only

The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) requires all applications to be submitted electronically through their application portal. Handwritten or walk-in applications are not accepted. To apply online, you’ll need your personal information, next of kin and account holder addresses, email addresses, and digital copies of supporting documents.

Applying for Multiple Qualifications at Wits University

Students can apply online for up to 3 qualifications per year. Wits will only process the first 3 choices received.

Tip: If applying for 2 programs within the same Faculty, consider applying for a third option in a different Faculty (Humanities, Commerce, or Science) to diversify your application. This is especially recommended for restricted programs like Health Sciences or Engineering.

Wits Online Application: Email & Phone Needed

While you can apply online, the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) requires an email address for confirmation and a phone number for potential contact. If you lack an email, consider creating a free Gmail account before starting your application.

Wits Online Application: Uploading Supporting Documents

Once you’ve completed your online application at Wits, the system will prompt you to upload required documents. Follow these steps:

1. Go to the Uploading Link: www.self-service.wits.ac.za
2. Login with your Student ID (person/student number) and password (birthdate in YYMMDD format).
3. Click Documents & Communications > Manage Documents.
4. Upload ALL pending documents as PDFs with clear names.
5. Save your changes.
6. Uploaded documents initially appear as “Not verified”. Once the Admissions Office verifies them, the status will change to “Electronic”.

Tracking Your Wits Application

You’ll receive confirmation of your online application submission by email or SMS. Check your junk mail folder in case the notification lands there. Additionally, you can track your application status on the Wits University website.
