SMU 2026 Readmission: How to Apply Reapply
Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University has officially reopened the application process for returning students for the 2026 academic year. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students are now invited to reapply.
All reapplications must be submitted through the SMU online portal before the specified deadlines. For more detailed information on readmission to SMU for 2026, please continue reading this article.
Prospective applicants who applied for the 2026 admissions but were not accepted can now reapply. SMU is currently accepting applications from all candidates, including those who applied previously.
When to Reapply to SMU 2026
Prospective applicants who were not accepted for the 2025 academic intake can now reapply to Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University for the 2026 academic year. The university is currently accepting applications from all applicants, including those who applied previously. The application deadlines are as follows:
- South African Students: Thursday, July 31, 2025, for all available programs
- International Students: Saturday, August 30, 2025, for all available programs

All returning students seeking readmission to Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) for the 2026 academic intake must pay a non-refundable application fee of R300.

How to Reapply at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University
Follow these steps to reapply as a returning student at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU):
- Visit www.smu.ac.za.
- Click on APPLY@SMU at the top of the page.
- Select Apply Now and choose the Returning Student tab.
- Enter your student number and PIN to access the portal.
- If you’ve forgotten your PIN, click Request a PIN, enter your student number, and check your registered email for the new PIN.
- Once logged in, complete all the required fields.
- Alternatively, download the application form from the SMU website, complete it manually, and submit it.
- Submit your completed form in person at any of SMU’s four campuses or send it by post to the university.

Documents Required for SMU Re-applications
The following documents must be ready at the time of application and submission:
Undergraduate Requirements
- Certified copy of your ID/passport document (compulsory).
- Certified Grade 11 end-of-year examination results (for those currently in grade 12) or your National Senior/Matric/IEB Certificate (if you have already completed Grade 12).
- Certified copies of your degree certificate(s) and academic record (if you attended or are currently a student at SMU or another university).
- Certified copy of your marriage certificate (if applicable).
- Proof of payment of the compulsory and non-refundable application fee
Postgraduate Requirements
- Matric exemption certificate (including subject marks)
- ID document / Passport / Work permit / Study permit
- Diploma/Degree certificate/s
- Comprehensive academic record (indicating marks obtained for subjects)
- Certificate of registration with the relevant professions council (if applicable)
- Letter of appointment as a registrar with a date of assumption of duty: applicants for M Med and M Dent students NB: letter from the employer, e.g. Hospital HR.
- Motivational letter and CV (Public Health applicants only)
- Medical aid (Non-South Africans)
- Students with non-South African qualifications must attach a SAQA evaluation certificate with their previous degrees obtained
