NSFAS Benefits
The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a lifeline for many students across South Africa, making higher education accessible to those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Here are some allowances one stands to receive if approved by NSFAS:
- Students living in Accommodation in an urban area will have R24 000 allowance per year.
- Students living in Accommodation in a peri-urban area will be paid an allowance of R18 900 per year.
- A student in an Accommodation in a rural area will be given an allowance of R15 750 per year.
- Students traveling 40 km from the institution to the residence will be given a transportation allowance of R7 350 every year
- Living expenses allowance up to R7 000 per year.
- Incidental/personal care allowance up to R2 900 per year.
- Monthly Living expenses allowance up to R15 000 per year.
- Monthly Learning materials/Book allowances capped at R5 200 per year.

Who is Qualified to Receive NSFAS Funding
To be considered for NSFAS funding, you must meet the following eligibility criteria
- You must be a South African citizen.
- You must come from a financially disadvantaged background.
- You should be applying for a public university, TVET college, or an accredited private higher education institution.
- Returning students must have passed their previous year of study and meet the academic progression requirements.
Important Dates For NSFAS 2025 Applications
The deadline for NSFAS applications for the academic year 2025-2026 is January 31, 2025, and the application is open as of September 21, 2024, so be sure to stay updated on the application opening and closing dates. You are encouraged to apply.

Step two: Complete the 2025 NSFAS Application
- Log in to your account and fill out the online application form. Provide accurate personal and academic details as well as information about your household income.
Step three: Upload Supporting Documents of NSFAS
- To verify your eligibility, you’ll need to submit certain documents. These may include your South African ID, your parent’s or guardian’s ID or death certificate (if applicable), proof of income, and academic transcripts.
Step Four: Review and Submit NSFAS Application Form

NSFAS Application Outcome for 2025
All applicants will be informed of their application status once NSFAS obtains confirmation from the Institution that they have received an academic offer. You will be made aware of this prior to the start of the academic year via SMS, email, and your myNSFAS account.
