Before you Apply to a University or Tvet College

There are many prominent universities and Tvet Colleges in South Africa. Three categories—traditional, technological, and comprehensive universities—are used to categorize their universities. By accessing the official website, you must decide which of these universities you want to apply to. Additionally, these universities welcome applicants from all across the world. Visit the official websites to learn more about the course options, fees, application forms, application opening and closing dates, and entry requirements. It’s interesting to note that before the application form is made available to the public, most of these institutions provide open days each year where prospective students can inquire and seek advice.

What is Required to Apply to a University or Tvet College

To apply to a university or Tvet College for the 2026 academic year, you must possess the following qualifications.

Academic Requirement

To receive an academic offer from a South African institution, you must fulfil every requirement due to the competition of the courses offered by the universities. You must pass your Matriculation (NSC) or have an international school-leaving certificate that is equal to it in order to apply and receive an official offer. The minimum requirement for admission to Tvet College is Grade 9.

Admission Points Score (APS)

Universities in South Africa assess candidates’ academic performance using the Academic Points Score (APS) system. The NSC results and performance in certain subjects are both taken into account by the APS. Students must seek a score that meets or exceeds the minimum APS requirements given by each program in order to be considered for admission.

Language Proficiency Requirements

In universities and Tvet colleges in South Africa, English is the language of instruction. International students whose official language is not English are required to show documentation of their proficiency in the language (English). International applicants who were not taught English must submit results from common examinations like the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and many more.

University and Tvet College Application and Status Process: Guidelines

Online Application Form

To apply to study at a university or Tvet College in South Africa for the 2025–2026 academic year, prospective applicants must either send the application form manually to the desired university or Tvet College or submit it online. Most institutions either receive an online form or a paper copy via mail, fax, email, or in person. To apply online, you must fill out the form, attach the required documents, update your contact information, and pay any applicable processing or application fees. After submitting the form, you should get an email or SMS acknowledging that it was submitted successfully.

Hard Copy Application Form

You must download and print the application form, fill it out with a pen (if necessary), and attach certified copies of all required documents, including proof of application fee payment, to the universities or Tvet colleges that require paper-based applications.

After submitting a completed application form, you should receive updates on the status of your application through email or SMS. You may also check the status of your application by going to the application portal and using your login information (student number and PIN).

Enrolment & Registrations Process

If the institution you applied to gives you a form offer, you have ten days to accept or reject the offer commencing on the day the university or Tvet College made the offer. The admission offer specifies all registration dates and fees. When you accept the offer, you must wait until the registration portal opens, which depends on the institution you applied to and is typically in January or February. During the registration time, make sure the necessary documents are uploaded. If you don’t register on time, you risk losing your admission status.
