UFS 2027 Applications Are Now Open – Apply Today

Applications for the 2027 academic year at the University of the Free State open on 1 April 2026 and close on 30 September 2026. Prospective students applying for undergraduate or postgraduate programmes are encouraged to begin their applications as early as possible. Applications may be submitted online or manually, and all required supporting documents must be uploaded while ensuring that the academic requirements are fully met.

What You Need to Apply

To begin your 2027 application to the University of the Free State (UFS), make sure you have the following:

  • Certified copies of your academic documents (latest results or qualification certificates)

  • A smartphone, tablet, or computer

  • A stable internet connection (for online applications)

  • Your South African ID number or passport number (for international applicants)

  • A valid email address and active phone number

  • Proof that you meet the minimum entry requirements for your chosen programme

Application Fee Requirement

The good news is that UFS does not charge an application fee for online or manual applications. You can apply at no cost.

UFS Required Documents For Online Applications 2027

The following documents must be ready at the time of application and submission:

  • Mobile phone and an active email address
  • Your ID if you are a South African citizen
  • Your passport if you are an international student
  • Your parent’s ID or passport if you are younger than 18
  • Your final Grade 11 results or the equivalent thereof with the school’s stamp
  • Your mid-year Grade 12 results or the equivalent thereof
  • Grade 12 certificate or the equivalent thereof if you have already matriculated
  • Your academic record, only if you are/were a student at another institution of higher learning
  • USAf accreditation from the examination board for South African universities
  • Universities South Africa (USAf) Certificate of Exemption is required if you do not have an Endorsed South African Senior Certificate.

Step 1

  • Apply online and upload all required documents.

  • Get your student number and submit any missing documents.

  • University checks if you qualify. If approved, you get a conditional offer (space not guaranteed).

Step 4

  • Apply for a USAF Exemption Certificate (if needed) and pay the required fee.

Step 5

  • Apply for police clearance(s) from all countries you lived in after turning 18.

Step 6

  • Receive a visa undertaking letter from UFS.

Step 7

  • Get advice from OIA and complete medical, X-ray, and medical aid requirements.

Step 8

  • Apply for your South African study visa.

  • Secure funding for your studies.

Step 10

  • Submit final results for final admission decision.

Step 11

  • Accept your offer online before the deadline.

Step 12

  • Register conditionally while finalising matriculation exemption.

Step 13

  • Pay the first fee, move into accommodation, and begin orientation and registration
