Applications for certificates, diplomas, degrees, honors, master’s, and PhD programs at University of the Witwatersrand for the 2026 academic year will be open from March 1, 2025, to September 30, 2025. However, some programs may have earlier closing dates. Prospective students are encouraged to visit www.wits.ac.za, the official website of the University of the Witwatersrand, from Saturday, March 1, 2025, to begin their application process.
Admission for first-year undergraduate students is limited, as the number of available spots is determined by the Department of Higher Education and Training. Final selection is based on academic performance, availability of spaces, and the timing of applications, so early submission is highly recommended
WITS Online Application Login
To access the Wits application form, applicants must log into the online application portal using their credentials. A smart device and a compatible browser, preferably Google Chrome, are required, as most browsers may not work properly. How to Use the University of the Witwatersrand’s (Wits) Application Portal
The Wits application portal is accessible through the university’s official website, www.wits.ac.za. To apply, use a smart device with an internet connection and navigate to the “Study at Wits” tab on the homepage. Complete all required fields, especially those marked with a red asterisk, as missing or incorrect information will prevent you from proceeding.

How to Complete the application form
Follow the instructions below to complete the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) admissions application form.
Step 1: Choose your Programme
- You may apply for a maximum of three programmes (order of choice does not matter
- If you apply for two programmes within one Faculty, you are advised to apply for one programme in a less restricted faculty (e.g. Humanities, Commerce or Science).
- Try to keep your study options open, especially when applying for programmes in faculties such as Health Sciences or Engineering.
- Do not enter the duration of the programme. You are applying to go into 1st year of study.
Step 2: Upload Supporting Documents
- If you did not upload supporting documents or pay your application fee at the time of application, you can still do so via the student self-service portal https://self-service.wits.ac.za
- Log in with your personal number (NOT your T number) and the first six digits of your ID.
Step 3: Pay your Application Fee
- A non-refundable application fee of R100 for South African citizens, and R700 for foreign citizens, is required and can be paid via the self-service portal.
Step 4: Submit your applications
- Apply using your names as they reflect in your ID book/card or passport (do not use initials or nicknames)
- Ensure that you submit the application and receive a letter acknowledging that your application has been submitted.

Current Matriculants:
- Upload your final Grade 11 results (no hardcopy required).
Already Matriculated:
- Upload certified copies of all your matric certificates/foreign school leaving certificates.
Transfer Students:
- Upload a certified copy of official academic records for ALL tertiary registrations, inclusive of a statement/certificate of good conduct, stamped by the institution’s registrar
