Applications are now open for admission into Walter Sisulu University (WSU) for the 2027 academic year. Suitably qualified and outstanding candidates are invited to apply for any of the available undergraduate programmes.

The application window is open to both South African and international students.

WSU 2027 Application Dates

The Walter Sisulu University 2027 application window will open from:

1 April 2026 – 31 October 2026

However, the closing date varies depending on the applicant’s nationality.

Application Deadline

  • 30 September 2026 – International applicants
  • 31 October 2026 – South African applicants

Important: Late applications will not be accepted.

If your previous application was unsuccessful, you must submit a new application for 2027.

Does WSU Charge an Application Fee?

No. Walter Sisulu University does not charge an application fee.

Applying to WSU is completely free for all applicants.

Walter Sisulu University Admission Requirements (2027)

Students applying to WSU must meet the minimum admission requirements set by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) as well as the specific requirements for their chosen programme.

Below are the general admission requirements.

Higher Certificate Requirements

To qualify for a Higher Certificate, applicants must have:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • At least 30% in the language of learning and teaching
  • Certification of the NSC by Umalusi

Some programmes may require additional subject combinations.

Diploma Admission Requirements

To qualify for a Diploma programme, applicants must have:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • At least 30% in the language of learning and teaching
  • Achievement rating of 3 (40–49%) in four recognised 20-credit subjects (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Certification by Umalusi

Bachelor’s Degree Admission Requirements

Applicants applying for a Bachelor’s Degree must have:

  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • At least 30% in the language of learning and teaching
  • Achievement rating of 4 (50–59%) in four recognised 20-credit subjects (excluding Life Orientation)
  • Certification by Umalusi

Some degree programmes may require specific subjects or higher grades.

Admission Requirements for International Students

International applicants are welcome to apply to WSU.

Applications are evaluated according to the Higher Education South Africa (HESA) guideline document titled: “A Guide to Application for Exemption Certificates.”

Some international qualifications may need to be evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) to ensure they meet South African standards.

Mature Age Endorsement

Applicants who do not meet the standard admission requirements may still be considered under the Mature Age Endorsement policy.
