A non-refundable application fee of R500 is required of all Nelson Mandela University international students. Applications will be rejected if the application fee is not paid. NMU Undergraduate Application Requirements for 2025-2026
The following documents are required to be submitted for applications to undergraduate courses at NMU:
- Proof of payment of application fee: This applies only to international applicants.
- Certified copy of ID document:
- South African citizens must submit a certified copy of their ID document. Applications cannot be processed without it. If an ID is not yet available, a certified copy of the birth certificate can be submitted instead.
- Certified copy of ID of parent/guardian/surety: This is required if the applicant is a dependent, currently attending school, or has recently left school and does not/will not have permanent employment upon application or during studies at the university.
- Certified copy of latest school results: This includes Grade 11 final results, Grade 12 June or September results, or final school leaving results. Grade 12 March results are not accepted.
- Official declaration form: This is required if the applicant is a dependent, currently attending school, studying at a tertiary institution, or has recently left school and does not/will not have permanent employment upon application or during studies at the university. The form must be signed by the applicant’s parent/guardian/surety.
- Academic records and certificates of conduct: These are required from previous institutions, if applicable.
- Diploma/Degree certificates: These are required, if applicable.
- Marriage certificate: This is required, if applicable.
- Certified copy of passport or proof of permanent residency: This is required for international students or South African applicants with permanent residency, respectively.
- Proof of residential/home/postal address: This is required if applying for on-campus accommodation.
- Completed disability assessment form: This is required, if applicable.
- Postgraduate application form: This is required for applications to postgraduate studies.

To be considered for admission to an undergraduate program at Northern Michigan University (NMU), applicants must satisfy the following academic requirements:
Higher Certificate:
- A pass in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching used at NMU, along with any additional university requirements.
Diploma:
- A pass in the NSC with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching used at NMU, and an achievement rating of 3 (40-49%) or better in four recognized 20-credit NSC subjects (excluding Life Orientation, which is 10 credits). Additional university requirements may also apply.
Bachelor’s Degree:
- A pass in the NSC with a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching used at NMU, and an achievement rating of 4 (50-59%) or better in four recognized 20-credit NSC subjects (excluding Life Orientation, which is 10 credits). Additional university requirements may also apply.
