You must comprehend the requirements for this prestigious bursary as you get ready to apply for funding. Because there are only a limited number of bursaries available, meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance; however, it does increase your chances of being accepted, as the best students are chosen to receive the bursary.

Funza Lushaka Bursary Application Eligibility Criteria and Requirements

The Applicant should excel academically

The cornerstone of eligibility for the Funza Lushaka Bursary is a commitment to academic excellence. Applicants are required to maintain a strong academic record throughout their studies, ensuring that they meet the minimum academic criteria set by the Department of Basic Education.

The Minimum academic requirements are:

  • An exemption, endorsement, or ‘admission to bachelor degree studies’ pass at matric/Grade 12 level.
  • At least a level 4 pass at matric level in the two subjects which the applicant will specialize in teaching.
  • For students who wish to specialize in the Foundation Phase, a Level 2 pass in Mathematics or a Level 4 pass in Mathematical Literacy at the Grade 12 level is required. In addition, at least a level 4 pass in the Home Language is required.
  • For students who wish to specialize in the Intermediated Phase, a Level 4 pass in Mathematics at the Grade 12 level is required. In addition, at least a level 4 pass in the Home Language is required.
  • For students who wish to specialize in Senior FET a level 4 pass in one of the National and one of the Provincial Priority subjects or two from the Provincial Priority subjects.
  • Students who wish to specialize in the teaching of Technical subjects, including Computer Applications Technology (CAT), and who do not have these subjects at the matric level, must have at least a level 4 pass in Mathematics or Technical Mathematics.

For new applicants already at the university    

  • Before the student applies for a bursary at the university, they need to have completed all of the modules they took that year with a passing grade. which Funza Lushaka considers to be priorities.
  • A minimum of a 55% passing average in every module finished during the applicant’s last year of college
  • The candidate must have earned a minimum pass average of 66.5% in modules related to their priority subject area of teaching specialization during their final year of university study.

For new applicants enrolling for PGCE   

  • NO Funza Lushaka Bursary will be awarded for PCGE – Foundation and Intermediate Phases
  • The student must have successfully completed a recognized qualification that has two teaching subjects that qualify him/her to be admitted for a PGCE.
  • Funza Lushaka Bursary will be awarded for PGCE for ONLY Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching (SPFET) (Grade 7-12)

Nationality and Residency

To qualify for the Funza Lushaka Bursary, applicants must be South African citizens. Additionally, they should be committed to making a positive impact on the local education landscape by agreeing to take up a teaching post in a public school for the number of years covered by the bursary upon completion of their studies.

Declaration of Previous Funding

A student who has been offered both a Funza Lushaka Bursary and another bursary must choose to decline the other bursary

Age Limit/Restriction

There is an age restriction for applicants. Applicants should be 30 years and below to qualify for the Funza Lushaka Bursary.

Choice of Study/Qualifications
