The Funza Lushaka Bursary Program: What is it?

The multi-year Funza Lushaka Bursary Program aims to encourage teaching as a career. Bursaries are offered to qualified students so they can finish their teaching certification in designated subject priority areas. Grant recipients will have to spend the same number of years funded teaching at a public school

Programmes and Subjects to be Funded by Funza Lushaka

Funza Lushaka is offering funding to two qualifications. The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) and Bachelor of Education are qualifications that are funded by the Lushaka Bursary Scheme. Subjects and programs funded by Funza

The qualification must include subjects that will allow the student to specialize as a teacher in at least two priority subject areas.

Priority Subject Areas – are subjects that are identified by Provinces and National Departments of Education as subjects where teachers are required. The priority subject areas for the Funza Lushaka Bursary include:

  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Technology
  • Foundation Phase (Grades R-3)
  • Intermediate and Senior Phase (i.e. Grades 4-9)

Qualification Funded by Lushaka Bursary Scheme

The following qualifications will receive funding from the Lushaka Bursary Scheme

Undergraduate studies   

4-year Bachelor of Education degree (B.Ed.), specializing in one of the following

  • Foundation Phases (Grade R – 3)
  • Intermediate Phase (Grade 4 – 6),
  • Senior and Further Education and Training Teaching (Grade 7-12).

Postgraduate Studies   

Graduates whose degrees reflect two priority subjects may be eligible for a one-year Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), with one module or course having been completed or studied at the third-year level and the second priority subject having been completed or studied at the second-year level.

The Funza Lushaka Bursary Scheme will only fund the PGCE for the Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching (SPFET) (Grades 7–12).

  • Natural Science & Technology

FET phase (i.e. Grades 10-12)

Funding will be given for a teaching major in TWO of the following:

  • Accounting
  • Agricultural Sciences
  • Agricultural Technology
  • Civil Technology
  • Computer Applications Technology
  • Electrical Technology
  • Engineering Graphics and Design
  • Geography; Information Technology
  • Life Sciences
  • Mathematics
  • Mechanical Technology
  • Physical Sciences
  • Languages
  • Maritime studies
  • Coding and Robotics
  • Technical Mathematics and Technical Science
