Important Information & Documentation Required for NSFAS Registration 2026

To be deemed acceptable for processing, a student’s application must include the following:

  • Valid Affidavit by Parents or Legal Guardians or Employer
  • Certified Copy of the SA ID (not older than 3 months)
  • Certified ID Copies of Parents or Legal Guardians
  • Salary Advice (Pay Slip) of Parents or Legal Guardians (not older than 3 months)
  • Academic Records from previous levels
  • Applicant home address, postal address and address while studying
  • Death Certificates if Parent(s) or Guardian(s) are deceased and Marriage Certificate (if applicable)

NSFAS Registration Requirements and Eligibility (2026)

South African students enrolled in public universities or TVET colleges in 2026 with a household gross income of R350,000 or less are eligible to apply for an NSFAS bursary. To register for NSFAS 2026, you also need to satisfy the academic requirements of the NSFAS-approved course.

However, you cannot register for NSFAS if:

  • You have already completed a previous qualification.
  • Your household income is over R350,000 per annum.
  • You are a student with pre-qualification and existing funding.
  • You are a foreign student.
  • You are studying in a private university.
  • You do not have an email address and a phone number.
  • You are studying a short course.
  • You are studying for postgraduate qualifications (Master’s and Doctorate).

NSFAS Official Registration Date and Deadlines (2026)

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) 2026 applications will close on 15 November 2025. Students who withdraw their applications before the deadline will still have the opportunity to resubmit, while new applicants are also encouraged to apply within this period.

Late submissions will not be accepted — so it is essential to complete and submit your application on time to secure funding.

NSFAS Coverage and Benefits (2026)

For University Applicants:

  • Accommodation based on actual university costs.
  • Transport (up to 40 km): R7,500 per annum.
  • Living allowance: R15,000 per annum.
  • Book allowances: R5,200 per annum.
  • Incidental/personal care allowance: R2,900 per annum for catered residences.

For TVET Colleges:

Accommodation Costs:

  • Urban: R24,000/year
  • Peri-urban: R18,900/year
  • Rural: R15,750/year

Other Costs:

  • Transport: R7,350/year
  • Incidental/personal care allowance: R2,900/year

How to Register for NSFAS 2026

Follow the steps below to register for NSFAS:

  • Visit www.nsfas.org.za for NSFAS 2026 registration.
  • Click on the “myNSFAS” tab at the top right corner.
  • Enter your username and password to register.
  • Click the “Register” button.
  • Ensure you have a valid copy of your South African ID or unabridged birth certificate.
  • Authorize NSFAS to verify and validate your information.
  • Enter your ID number, full name, and surname.
  • Key in your active email address and cellphone number.
  • Create a password and confirm it.
  • Upload a copy of your identification document.
  • Click on “Register” to receive a one-time pin (OTP).
  • Receive the OTP via email and cellphone number.
  • Enter the OTP and submit your application.
