Qualifications Funded By NSFAS 2024-2025

A program called the National Student Financial Aid Scheme offers poor and working-class South Africans completely free higher education and training. Funding from NSFAS is available for accredited university programs leading to undergraduate degrees and diplomas. NSFAS will provide funding for all qualified students who meet the R350 000 household income threshold and have been accepted to universities and TVET institutions to pursue undergraduate degrees such as higher certificates, diplomas, and bachelor’s degrees.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the qualifications funded by NSFAS for the upcoming academic years, empowering you to seize the opportunity and embark on your academic journey.

Number of qualifications Funded By NSFAS at a time

A student is only eligible for funding for one qualification at a time from a single institution. The student might receive funding to attend a university if they earned an N6 at a TVET college. You must submit an application for funding for university once your N6 is completed.

Undergraduate Qualifications:

NSFAS is still dedicated to helping students in a range of undergraduate programs across academic fields. Whether engineering, arts, health sciences, business, or any other field of study is your passion, NSFAS may help pay for your tuition, housing, required books, and other study-related expenses. You might qualify for NSFAS funding for your undergraduate degree if you match the qualifying requirements and come from a household with a combined income of R350,000 or less per year.

List of Tvet and University Qualifications Funded By NSFAS

Depending on what you need there are different avenues to pursue when it comes to furthering your education after school. However, Not all courses and qualifications are funded by NSFAS. Here are the qualifications that are funded by NSFAS:

Higher Certificate Qualifications

A Higher Certificate qualifies as a skills-focused certificate and is therefore eligible for NSFAS funding. With the help of some practical knowledge, it strives to give students the specialized skills they need to have a fundamental understanding of their field of study. This course requires at least a year to finish. Tuition, accommodation, transportation, educational materials, and food are all covered by NSFAS, and on top of that, a student receives a monthly allowance to cover other living expenses while enrolled in courses. In order to enroll in a higher certificate program at a university or Tvet college, prospective students must have a Matric Pass or its equivalent.

Diploma Qualifications

While similar to a degree, diplomas focus on practical work experience and internships rather than theoretical information. It takes Two to Three Years (full-time) to complete a diploma course at the university or Tvet College. Any NSFAS-approved student studying for diploma qualification is fully absorbed into the program to be funded and sponsored throughout the studies. Expenses such as school fees, registration fees, hostel fees, books, transportation, and daily expenses are all covered by NSFAS

Degree (Undergraduate Degree)

Degrees are divided into three levels: Undergraduate, Post-Graduate, and Doctorial. Each of which builds on the previous level. This means students are required to complete one level before they can apply to a higher level. However, the only qualification that is funded is an undergraduate degree which is called a “BACHELOR’S OR FIRST DEGREE”. BACHELOR’S OR FIRST DEGREE is basically theoretical than practical. Applicants who have been given an offer to study undergraduate degree will be given allowances to cater for accommodation, food, books, and personal care. NSFAS will pay the full registration and tuition fee for all undergraduate students throughout the course period

Post-Graduate, and Doctorial

NSFAS will no longer provide funding for postgraduate courses such as postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas, honours degrees, and master’s and PhD degrees.

Only first-degree qualifications are covered by the NSFAS bursary; second qualifications are not supported. Postgraduate students are not funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), and there are no second qualifications for NSFAS financing.
